Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Huber Heights public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Urban Tree Grant replanting plan
The city plans to solicit bids for tree planting under an urban tree grant, adding greenery to public spaces.
Tree work at Cloud and Community Parks
A $100,000 federal grant will fund new large and medium street trees, mostly along Old Troy Pike where Bradford pears were removed, with bids this fall and planting next spring. Future Brant Pike road improvements mean trees there are being deferred to avoid planting then removing them.
Bradford pear tree removal public campaign
The city is cutting down roughly 180 invasive Callery (Bradford) pear street trees, which are brittle and crowding out native forest in Metro Park. A $100,000 federal grant through the state covers removal, and every tree will be replaced at a two-to-one ratio with native, more diverse species.
Establishing a tree board or tree commission
ODNR foresters will attend the July meeting to help set up a tree board and discuss options for a $100,000 tree grant currently earmarked for street and park trees.
Tree City USA recognition
The board approved buying 300 seedlings for the April tree giveaway, with a National Wildlife Federation grant covering $300 of the cost. The city was also officially accepted as a Tree City USA.
Annual Tree Giveaway and NWF Seedling Grant
Parks and Rec is expanding pollinator habitat work: native seed collection at Cloud and RipRap Parks, an EPA grant for signage and invasive plant removal, an April tree and plant giveaway, and a June native bee class.
Styrofoam Collection Event Volunteers
The city needs volunteers on April 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rose Music Center to shred styrofoam for recycling. Bring gloves.
OEFF/EPA pollinator grant application
The city applied for a mini grant to remove invasive plants from pollinator beds at Cloud and Rip Rap Parks and add signage teaching visitors how to collect seeds. A Rotary-sponsored CJ student group will plant milkweed at Rip Rap.
